Fetis, a pupil of his in 1800, "noted that, during the composing of Le Calife de Bagdad, the modest, lenient pedagogue would frequently play passages from the score and consult his pupils on it at their lessons." (Grove) The opera was first performed at the Opera Comique in Paris on 16 September, 1800.
